Education to Secure Independence \u2013 A<\/strong>\u00efchatou\u2019s Story<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A\u00efchatou Adamou is going against the grain with strong support from her mother, Zeinabou. For A\u00efchatou, the dream is independence, and education is the way to secure it.<\/p>\n

A\u00efchatou lives in rural Niger where the obstacles to education are numerous. Long and potentially dangerous distances to schools discourage parents from sending their children. A lack of support for the schools, as well as supplies for the students, hinders attendance. Due to poverty, children are often needed to help support their families, leading them to leave school at a young age.<\/p>\n

For girls, there is added complexity. Gender norms and family and social expectations don\u2019t value girls\u2019 education. Instead, girls are forced to marry young and rely on their husbands.<\/p>\n

Yet, many of these children, along with some of their family and community, yearn for a better life. Education is a proven way to break the cycle of poverty and the perpetuation of injustice. Through the BRIGHT project, with funding from the Government of Canada, ADRA has partnered with communities in Niger, Sudan, and Myanmar to make education more accessible to children. BRIGHT is changing the perceptions of education\u2019s value, thus ensuring more children \u2013 especially girls \u2013 go to school. It is also building teachers\u2019 capacity and offering support to schools.<\/p>\n

At 15, A\u00efchatou has only a third-grade education. The fifth of eight children, she had to abandon school to help support her family by selling rice couscous and peanuts in the market.<\/p>\n

When BRIGHT came to A\u00efchatou\u2019s community, she saw an opportunity for something better. She enrolled in the BRIGHT accelerated learning program, which will enable her to complete her primary education in two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one is perfect,\u201d shares her teacher, Mrs. Seyni. \u201cBut she does her best, she works hard. She reminds the other students to be respectful of the teacher. And if she sees that a classmate doesn\u2019t have something, even if it\u2019s a pen, even if it\u2019s the only one she has \u2013 she gives it to the one who needs it. I appreciate that about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though in school, A\u00efchatou\u2019s challenges aren\u2019t over. Her father objects to her returning to school, and she risks his anger by pursuing this path. But Zeinabou, who believes strongly in education and wants her daughter to be independent, covers for A\u00efchatou. Occasionally, when her family\u2019s financial needs are great, A\u00efchatou must miss school to sell foodstuffs in the market. Additionally, she suffers from eye troubles.<\/p>\n

Yet, A\u00efchatou is persevering in her dream of independence. For her, it\u2019s worth it to get an education. She wants to support herself through her own business as a seamstress. She believes that knowing how to read and write, along with numeracy skills, will help her to be successful.<\/p>\n

A Woman Mechanic \u2013 Farida\u2019s Story<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A\u00efchatou is not the only girl with big dreams and a strong drive to achieve them.<\/p>\n

Farida a 18 ans, mais n'a qu'un 6\u00e8me<\/sup> \u00e9ducation de qualit\u00e9. Des difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 l'\u00e9cole ont conduit \u00e0 ses mauvais r\u00e9sultats, il a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cid\u00e9 pour elle d'abandonner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like school anymore,\u201d she confided.<\/p>\n

Lorsque BRIGHT est arriv\u00e9e dans sa communaut\u00e9, Farida a saut\u00e9 sur l'occasion. Plut\u00f4t que de rejoindre la fili\u00e8re d'apprentissage acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9, Farida a opt\u00e9 pour la fili\u00e8re de l'\u00e9cole professionnelle. Contrairement aux attentes, Farida ne voulait pas devenir cuisini\u00e8re ou couturi\u00e8re, deux vocations largement consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme acceptables pour les femmes. Au lieu de cela, \u00e0 la grande opposition de sa famille, Farida a poursuivi une carri\u00e8re de m\u00e9canicienne rurale.<\/p>\n

Farida enrolled at the local vocational school which had received some material support from the BRIGHT project. She was undaunted at the prospect of being the only girl in her class. She had her eye on the prize of independence through her future business as a rural mechanic. In Farida\u2019s area, rural mechanics are rare. This rarity means that if a rural mechanic set up shop, there would be plenty of business opportunities. Farida knew that the amount of motorcycle repairs, generator repairs, and repairs on motor pumps \u2013 which are widely used for gardening \u2013 would keep her in business.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Farida\u2019s courage and determination were no match for the onslaught of opposition from her family. Without a single champion among her relatives to offer support, Farida sullenly succumbed. Thankfully, she wasn\u2019t pressured to drop out of vocational school altogether. Though she is now following the more traditional seamstress track, she still cherishes her dream of becoming a mechanic.<\/p>\n

Farida looks hopefully to the sensitization sessions that ADRA conducts in communities to transform hearts and minds regarding girls\u2019 education and opportunities. The perception of her peers, and several parents, is not different from Farida\u2019s parents\u2019 perception of gender. BRIGHT is working within communities to remove physical, mental, and behavioural obstacles to children\u2019s \u2013 especially girls\u2019 \u2013 potential. While Farida is grateful for the material support that BRIGHT provided, she truly hopes that many of her peers will be empowered by the project\u2019s sensitization sessions to pursue whatever vocation they dream of.<\/p>\n

Parents everywhere want their children\u2019s lives to be better than their own. Zeinabou is supporting A\u00efchatou\u2019s path to independence and opportunity \u2013 something Zeinabou didn\u2019t get to enjoy. A\u00efchatou\u2019s children will surely benefit from her choices. Perhaps Farida will overcome the obstacles in her path. Perhaps she will ensure her children enjoy the opportunities she has had to fight hard for.<\/p>\n
